About the A220

The A220 was originally developed by Bombardier under the C Series name. The aircraft has a five-abreast seat layout, which competes with the larger variants of the Embraer E2, the B737 MAX-7, and SSJ aircraft in the short-haul market.

With its maiden flight in 2013, and entering service in 2016, the A220 is optimized to be light-weight, fuel-efficient, and aerodynamic. Airlines operating the A220 report better than expected fuel economy.

Airbus acquired a 50.1% stake in the A220 in 2017, filling a gap for smaller capacity aircraft in its line-up, and complementing the A319. In 2020 Bombardier exited the program completely, leaving Airbus with a 70% stake.

With over 700 orders made, the A220 is set to be a serious competitor, and will become a more familiar visitor at airports globally. Pilots training on the A220 will have a positive career outlook for many decades.
